CO₂ and Cognitive Effects
Carbon dioxide accumulates in sealed rooms — bedrooms overnight, offices with poor ventilation, living rooms after a long evening indoors. Research has shown that elevated CO₂ levels (above 1,000 ppm) can affect cognitive function, reaction time, and sleep quality. In a well-sealed home without adequate ventilation, CO₂ from normal breathing can build up over the course of an evening or a night without reaching levels that feel alarming — but above the range where the indoor environment is genuinely comfortable.
VOCs and Chemical Off-gassing
Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) are emitted by a wide range of materials and products commonly found in homes: new furniture, flooring, paint, cleaning products, personal care products, and adhesives. Most off-gas at higher rates when new and decrease over time, but in a tightly sealed home, concentrations can remain elevated longer than they would in a better-ventilated space. VOC exposure at elevated levels has been associated with headaches, irritation, and fatigue, though effects vary significantly by compound and individual sensitivity.
Humidity
Both high and low relative humidity can contribute to discomfort that affects sleep and daily energy levels. Air that is too dry can cause throat irritation and disrupt sleep. Air that is too humid can support conditions conducive to mould growth, create musty odours, and affect the general comfort of the space. The ideal indoor range is generally considered to be 30–50% relative humidity.
What to Do
The practical starting point is measurement. Without knowing the actual CO₂ level in the bedroom overnight, the VOC concentration in the living area, or the humidity readings in different parts of the home, it is not possible to know whether the indoor environment is contributing to how you feel or whether the cause is something else entirely.
