From Commercial Buildings to the Family Nursery: Why I Founded RBM Group
I spent more than 20 years working in commercial HVAC and building science before I founded RBM Group. In that time, I worked on everything from large institutional facilities to complex mechanical systems where indoor air quality was tracked, measured, and actively managed. Occupant comfort wasn't guesswork — it was engineering.
What struck me, as I moved through that career, was the gap between how seriously commercial buildings take their indoor environments and how rarely residential homes receive the same attention. The air in an office or hospital is measured. The air in the home where a family sleeps, eats, and spends most of their time often isn't.
My own turning point came when my family moved into a newer, more energy-efficient home. Modern airtight construction is genuinely better for energy performance — but it also means that whatever is in the indoor air tends to stay there. CO₂ from breathing, VOCs from new materials and furnishings, humidity from cooking and bathing, and radon from the ground below the foundation — all of these accumulate differently in a well-sealed home compared to an older, draftier building.
When I started looking at our home's indoor environment with the same professional approach I'd used in commercial buildings, I found things I wouldn't have known without measurement. That experience made it clear that what I could do professionally — proper diagnostics, written findings, practical recommendations — was something other families needed access to.
That's why RBM Group exists. Not to sell equipment. Not to diagnose first and confirm second. But to measure what's actually happening inside a home, explain it honestly, and recommend only what the data supports.
The work spans radon testing and mitigation, full indoor air quality assessments, and targeted solutions where the evidence shows they're needed. Every engagement ends with written findings. That's the standard I applied in commercial buildings, and it's the standard I bring to residential homes across Uxbridge, Durham Region, the GTA, and surrounding Ontario communities.
